Dirty Projectors – 'Rise Above' review
Brace yourself: here’s an album of free jazz, no wave, funk and noise, consisting purely of reinvented versions of selected tracks from Damaged, the debut album from early-80s hardcore punks Blag Flag. And if you think that sounds dubious, the weirdest part is that, against all odds, it's utterly brilliant. Dazzling, compelling, unpredictable and brilliantly paced, it is a total one-off, and if that alone doesn’t deserve your attention, then the sheer artistry, audacity and downright oddness of this whole project definitely should.
