Johnny Foreigner – 'Waited Up Til It Was Light' review
Depending on what songs you’ve heard, Johnny Foreigner are either the rightful heirs to the Pixies’ throne or a blander Idlewild, but don’t expect to be swayed one way or the other here – Waited’s quality is so variable that there’s enough evidence to support either claim. Eyes Wide Terrified features classic Black-Deal harmonies and guitar lines, then the very next song descends into trite pub-rock, with some embarrassingly corny production gimmicks doing nothing to help. Ultimately, while Waited... is a decent stab at post-Song 2 guitar indie, it’s too one-dimensional and slapdash to ever be truly loveable.
