Primal Scream live review

Published on

Primal Scream have previous in both terrible and triumphant shows, and while tonight doesn’t hit the peaks or troughs of either, it’s definitely a gig of two halves. Five of the first six songs are from forthcoming album Beautiful Future, showcasing more of the same Rolling Stones pastiche that served them so well last time around. However, what’s missing is the vigour and stupidity that made the big dumb rock’n’roll of Riot City Blues bearable – what remains is pretty drab.

Thankfully, with the new stuff out of the way, things pick up. Swastika Eyes, Accelerator and the now-mandatory Rocks all fizz with the aggression and machismo of vintage Scream, and Bobby G finally comes to life for the encore’s rare outing of I’m Losing More Than I’ll Ever Have and a defiantly joyful romp through Movin’ On Up. By no means a classic, but sporadically brilliant.
