Renfro – 'Mathematics' review
Mathematics is another bedroom folktronica record with equally large debts to the ethereal end of Four Tet and Autechre’s trademark beautiful-glitch thing. But just when you think you’ve heard this all before, Renfro add a disastrous point of difference in the form of a male singer who would be considered soulful on the X-Factor and schmulzy, insincere and incredibly naff everywhere else. While the backing tracks of elegantly compiled clicks, pops and buzzes are certainly nothing spectacular, they hint at something interesting. Anything remotely listenable, though, is bludgeoned by the saccharine, witless vocals.
